What We Learned on The Business Leadership Podcast
In a recent episode of the Business Leadership podcast, Clearco’s CEO, Andrew Curtis, shared insights about the company’s journey as pioneers in the ecommerce non-dilutive, revenue-based financing space. Joined by podcast host Edwin Frondozo, Andrew discusses a range of topics, including how to support entrepreneurs, the importance of staying true to your north star, and the art of creating products that resonate with customers.
While many important topics were discussed, these were the top 4 lessons that stood out to us:
1️⃣ The Power of Word-of-Mouth Marketing
According to the Nielsen Trust in Advertising Survey, 88% of global respondents trust recommendations from people they know more than any other channel. Despite the advancements in sophisticated marketing technology, social platforms, and AI, word of mouth remains a highly effective and impactful approach for businesses above all else.
Andrew highlights that this principle is vital at Clearco. He values when customers share their positive experiences with their peers. By offering a product that is simple, fast, and transparent, Clearco makes it easy for customers to spread the word.
2️⃣ The Art of Pivoting for Success
Pivoting is more than just a buzzword in the startup world; it's essential for achieving lasting success. The ability to pivot and find the right product-market fit often requires a company to change its product to meet customer needs.
Andrew shares a time in Clearco’s past where some major pivots took place as a result of a turbulent economy. After an aggressive overseas expansion with various products, the founders shifted their focus and developed a new offering–Invoice Funding. This followed a phase of recapitalization and withdrawal from international markets.
Now, Clearco concentrates on one product and one geography, leading to greater discipline, scalability, and a path to profitability.
3️⃣ Winning Back Former Customers
Losing a customer can be a devastating blow, but it’s an inevitable part of running a business. customers may leave for various reasons, such as budget cuts, changing preferences, or perceived lack of value. However, consistently refining your product and differentiating it from the competition can encourage customers to return.
After Clearco pivoted its business, they successfully re-engaged with former customers who were drawn back in and excited by the new Invoice Funding product. While Clearco focuses on building new customer relationships, Andrew loves it when he can serve returning customers as well.
4️⃣ The Importance of Transparency in Leadership
Communicating clearly and succinctly with employees is a core leadership principle Andrew upholds. During Clearco's recapitalization period, his team was provided with detailed facts and complete transparency, even when the information was difficult to deliver. Andrew's commitment to open honesty helped employees feel secure and motivated even through challenging times.
These are just a few great nuggets from Andrew and Edwin’s conversation. Interested in learning more? You can catch the full episode on the Business Leadership podcast here:
