I was passionate about the health and fitness space, so in the final year of my masters degree my fiance and I had taken the plunge and decided to launch a nutrition company. I had spent six years waiting tables and bartending, so to start this business I pretty much had taken every penny I saved up. It was scary, but I always knew that with enough passion and hard work we would be able to execute.
Everything in my life was moving so quickly. I had graduated, I was recently engaged and was launching my business. Then, I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a football sized tumour in my chest that was so debilitating I could hardly keep my eyes open let alone look at a screen. Getting out of bed was nearly impossible.
The stress at this point was pretty high. All I could think about was, how am I going to grow this business. I was incredibly fortunate to have my fiance there through it all, not just as my support system but as my business partner. Knowing that you’re powerless is one of the worst feelings in the world, but having someone there to make sure everything and anything is being done is a comforting feeling.
Closer to the end of my chemotherapy all I could think about was our company motto, Stay Focused x Be Consistent. So pretty much every day I was opening up my laptop and doing a bit of work. Even if it was only an hour or two, it gave me peace of mind.
My experience reinforced my beliefs and love for health and fitness. At the time of my diagnosis I was in the best shape of my life. So to be able to continue to build my brand based on my beliefs is an incredible feeling.
